πŸ₯© Amish Poor Mans Steak offers a comforting and hearty meal with juicy hamburger patties bathed in rich mushroom gravy.
🍽️ Easy to prepare and packed with flavor, this dish is perfect for a satisfying dinner alongside mashed potatoes or buttered noodles.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 35 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

2 pounds ground hamburger

1 cup crushed saltine cracker crumbs (about 28 crackers)

1 scant cup milk

Half a small finely chopped onion

1Β½ teaspoons salt

Β½ teaspoon black pepper

Β½ teaspoon chili powder

Β½ teaspoon garlic powder

3 tablespoons butter for cooking

1 or 2 cans cream of mushroom soup for gravy

1Β½ cups milk (one soup can full) for gravy

Instructions

1-First, gather all ingredients and prepare them by crushing the saltine crackers and chopping the onion finely. In a large bowl, combine 2 pounds of ground hamburger with 1 cup of crushed saltine cracker crumbs, 1 scant cup of milk, half a small finely chopped onion, 1Β½ teaspoons of salt, Β½ teaspoon each of black pepper, chili powder, and garlic powder. Mix gently until everything blends well, then shape the mixture into eight thick patties.

2-Next, coat the patties in flour for a nice crust. Melt 3 tablespoons of butter in a skillet over medium heat and brown the flour-dusted patties briefly on both sides. Transfer them to a 9 x 13-inch baking dish once they’re seared. For the gravy, mix 1 or 2 cans of cream of mushroom soup with about 1Β½ cups of milk, then pour it over the patties in the dish.

3-Now, bake the dish covered at 350Β°F (175Β°C) for 50 to 55 minutes, then uncover and bake for an additional 10 minutes until the gravy is bubbly and the patties are fully cooked. Let the steaks rest for a few minutes before serving to keep them juicy. Finally, serve hot with sides like mashed potatoes or buttered noodles to soak up the gravy.
